Things my bf thinks are weird

Happy Friday everyone!!  I have a light and silly post for you today to kick off the weekend!

The bf and I got into an interesting conversation about some of my weird quirks.  While he pokes fun at me for them, I know he loves my quirks.  It’s what makes me…me!  So I thought I’d make a silly, funny and quirky post to see if you think our quirks are normal…or according to him- weird!

BF hates to eat anything microwaved. Except popcorn.  Weird.

I sleep with two comforters year round.  And no top sheet (only fitted).  Normal.

BF must have AC on in the car all the time.  In the middle of winter, a blizzard, an ice age. Doesn’t matter. Weird.

frozenSource

I eat omelets plain- no salt or pepper, only with jam.  Normal.

I shower at night and get ready for work in the morning in 30 mins flat. Maybe weird.

I HATE celery with a fiery passion. Normal.

no

Offer me celery? NO.

Bf HATES banana in anything.  But likes a plain banana.  Weird.

Know how you can be ‘bounced’ really high by another on a trampoline?  This freaks me out.  Bf thinks this is weird.  And hilarious.

While he is totally happy for me, Bf doesn’t quite understand this whole blogging deal- and that I am going to a retreat specifically for meeting other bloggers. WEIRD!!

I’m sure he thinks there will be lots of pillow fights- because that’s all girls do when we have sleepovers, right?

Silly boys 🙂

Have a great weekend everyone!!  I have bachelorette party shenanigans to attend Saturday!!

Question:  What are some of your quirks your significant other thinks are weird?  What do you think they do is weird?

Mark Beiswanger Memorial WOD

Tears rolled down my face when I read this on facebook yesterday:

CrossFit Stafford will once again host the Mark Beiswanger Memorial WOD (Workout of the Day) on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 10AM to Noon.

MarkWOD11

The cost of participating in the WOD will be $25 and with your donation, you will receive a t-shirt and admission to the cookout following the WOD.

Please preregister on link on the left sidebar.  This is an open WOD so you don’t have to be a member in order to participate.  All proceeds will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  Bring your friends and family to support this charitable event and to honor Mark’s memory.”

I went to high school with Mark and had NO idea he took his own life- and two years ago, no less!  If you know me than you know my heart-breaking connection with suicide and passion for suicide prevention.  While we were never close, I do remember Mark’s jovial yet reserved manner, and I cannot believe he is gone.  It is never easy to learn a friend has passed, and even harder when I learned it was by suicide.

As much as I would LOVE to do this WOD at Crossfit Stafford, I will be attending a close friend’s bachelorette celebration.  However, I do intend to donate to the cause and spread the word.

*Fellow Crossfitters, please spread the word about this memorial WOD.  And if you’re in the DC Metro or NOVA area, please consider joining Crossfit Stafford for a WOD to honor Mark.  As mentioned above and on their site, its an open WOD and anyone can join.*

The little things

Happy Wednesday!! I cannot wait till this week is over.  I have been in such a blah mood I can’t seem to shake. When I get a little down about life circumstances (crummy job, finance worries, etc), I try to focus on the good things in my life. I was touched by a post Julie did over at Peanut Butter Fingers where she described the little things that bring her joy.  In rough economic and political times such as these, I think its a great idea to remember the little things are what make life worth living. Here are some of mine:

Reading in bed with my boyfriend M. So yes, we are old.  Both M and I love to read so frequently before bed we read next to one another.  It’s a bit cheesy, but I love it. I just finished The Host by Stephenie Meyer. It was a fantastic read that I could not put it down!! I highly recommend it for all you fellow dystopian novel lovers!

Making coffee for my mom. When I visit my mom I usually wake up before she does (woah, role reversal!).  When my dad was diagnosed with cancer and was home a lot, he would still make it out of bed to make and bring my mom her coffee in bed before work.  On weekends it was a leisurely thing they enjoyed together, sipping coffee and talking about weekend plans.  I make it a point to make and bring her coffee when I’m home. Even though I can’t replace her soul mate, I feel like, for a brief moment, I can provide a tiny morsel of that joy I know she misses so much.

Watching the sunrise/sunset. Cliche? Nope. I don’t watch it every morning and night, but especially when I go on vacation, I make it a point to watch at least one sunrise and sunset.  It is such an amazing feeling of accomplishment and wonder to see the sun rise and set in different parts of the world.

I also enjoy seeing the beautiful sunrises on my commute to work.

No filter and yes I took this :)

No filter- walk to work

Sadly, thanks to daylight savings, I don’t see them any more 😦

Sunflower seed butter.

sunbutter

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter you know my obsession love for sunflower seed butter.  Especially Once Again nut butter, which is made where my boyfriend grew up! They make excellent things there 🙂

Tiny accomplishments at Crossfit. It’s hard for me to be proud of the little accomplishments in Crossfit.  I tend to want to get things right the first time and get frustrated when I’m the ‘wimpy’ one in class, but Monday night I didn’t care.  I did power snatches with the ‘training’ bar and added 5# to each side, plus the wood plates for stability, with no shame.  I even had a SUPER hardcore coach who was taking the class work right behind me, intensely power lifting his way through with a crazy intimidating, weight belt-strapped-muscle-heavy body.  His name is Sven…. doesn’t that just ooze intimidation?!  But I did the workout and finished with good reps and did not even care he was there!

Cat snuggles. When my roommate is home, her two cats predominantly stick to her side.  But when I get home before she does they latch themselves onto me and it is so cute!

Patty all snuggled :)

Patty all snuggled 🙂

Patty will snuggle with me on the couch and Phindus will sleep on my bed.  They aren’t mine, but for a few hours it feels nice to have fur babies comfort me 🙂

Those are just a few for now.  Maybe I can do a regular post about the little things in life I enjoy to help inspire others that are also in a rut!

Rock on Lovers 🙂

What are some of your little joys in life?

Crossfit Elements #1 Recap and Why I Workout

Hiya happy Tuesday! How are you all doing? I am fantastic!! I am a bit sore this morning but it hurts so good!

hurtSource

As you may have read in yesterday’s post I was pretty nervous for my first of 8 Crossfit Elements classes. All new Crossfit members must take this ‘fundamentals course’ to learn the proper movements for exercises, Olympic lifts, etc. The first class was pretty easy compared to the intro class. The instructor chatted for most of the class about the what and why of Crossfit. After a quick warm-up, we then learned the proper way to do pushups, pull-ups, squats, sit-ups, and burpees- all with scalable, modified options to work your way up to the full, hard version of the exercise. We completed the fist class with a small WOD- a mini ‘Cindy.’

Mini Cindy:
AMRAP in 10 minutes of:
5 pull-ups
10 pushups
15 air squats

I completed 7 rounds + 5 pull-ups. I used a green band for the pull-ups (not sure what that equates to?) and did pushups on my knees. Most of the pull-up bar space was taken by other members and newbies, so I got stuck with a taller bar- so this shortie had to jump on a super high box to reach it and needed help looping the band on my foot a couple times. I think I could’ve done at least 1-2 more rounds had I not had a hard time pulling the band under my foot for the pull-ups. But I didn’t want to overdo it and completely wear myself out for class  tomorrow either. Like our instructor Aviv said- check your ego at the door!

egoSource

After class wrapped up I briefly chatted with Aviv about my previous torn rotator cuff injury. He said some movements like the clean and jerk may need to be modified, but to tell the coach beforehand of any class of the injury and definitely not push through anything that feels iffy or painful.

I was so excited I did pull-ups for the first time in ages I called my mom. I think my dad would’ve been more open to this discussion as my mom was completely un-phased by my excitement. She placated me a bit before mumbling something about not seeing the reason behind why I workout. I told her exactly what Aviv told us-When I am old and in a nursing home I want to be able to get up and use the bathroom without assistance! I want to make sure I keep my one and only body in this life healthy and able to do anything I want in 60+ years!

This got me thinking of other reasons why I workout and keep healthy:

  • To be a strong woman for myself and my family
  • To feel amazing and accomplished
  • To help ward off anything I am genetically predisposed to (cancer in several forms, high blood pressure, etc).

Even though I know my mom didn’t mean to ask me in a condescending manner, I was a bit miffed.  Odd workout words aside, my mom was proud and excited at the end of the conversation.  And today when she wasn’t particularly happy with a sarcastic response, she replied, “Oh go do some crosstraining or something.”  Moms.

Bright side? My new shoes rocked!!

Snazzy!

Ninja Shoes!

That’s all I have for ya today!  I am so excited for class again tomorrow night!  I hope its a tough one 🙂

Rock on Lovers:)

ps- Quick pet peeve rant.  At my job we have an instant messenger (to stalk people/IM like in high school/get angry when someone doesn’t instantly reply and therefore think we’re slacking off).  Well a coworker IM’d me to ask for help.  We are not on each others’ frequent contact list so he had to look me up…and the dude still typed out Krystal when my name is clearly labeled Krista.  I would even let Kristan slide since my official name at work is Krista N.  Grumble.  Ok I’m done 🙂

Question: Ever tried Crossfit?  Why do you work out? Pet Peeve??

pps- Looking for people to do a guest post while I am away with the bf this weekend!  Email if you’re interested! tinynfit@gmail.com

Gorgeous October Wedding and a Workout!

Hello there and happy Tuesday evening!  How is everyone doing post-Sandy?  I must say I had expected and planned for the worst when Hurricane Sandy was predicted to hit the DC metro area Monday into Tuesday.  I mean they closed the Federal Government for two days (woohoo!), I expected worse.  But thankfully we were spared any major issues and the power stayed on through crazy strong gusts of wind and rain.  While we got away easy, I want to send my thoughts and prayers to those in NJ and NY and all along the eastern shore and New England who weren’t so lucky.

On to the good stuff!  The past couple of weeks I have been really working hard at my running intervals on the treadmill.  I have been steadily increasing the length of my interval times as well as the entire running time.  Either the treadmill is lying or I am getting better!!  At the end of each treadmill sprint workout with one of these body weight exercises (in some cases I’d add weights, like with lunges or squats).  It rocked!!  This one is from Sweet Tooth Sweet Life.

Expect lots of sweat!

I did this the day of the wedding I attended for my bestie C!  I was actually one of two day-of coordinators that helped ensure the wedding went without a hitch.  And it did!  The weather was perfect, the bride was gorgeous (as was her dress, it was amazing!), and I was so glad to help.  Even after the time I was supposed to end my duties I stepped up and helped some more- with the DJ, with caterers, and with the wedding party to ensure their entrance to the reception happened smoothly!  I am so happy for C and her groom D!  Congrats you two!!

Ready for the vows!

The kiss!

My handsome date 🙂

Hope everyone made it through Sandy safely!  Have a fantastic night and Happy Halloween!

Holy Heatwave and Froyo News!

Hello and happy Monday! How was everyone’s 4th of July? Mine wasn’t too shabby! Spent it with the bf and friends and staying indoors- it has been ridiculously hot in the DC area! And the weekend prior almost the entire area lost power! I ended up only spending a portion of the weekend at my moms to celebrate her birthday as her power went out in addition to mine! Thankfully my bf (who luckily was one of the few who had power) let me mooch off crash with him in his AC apartment. But we did get it back late Sunday morning so I was able to return home to finish the weekend chores and get ready with power for the workweek!

Last weekend was the hottest of this crazy heat wave the country has been experiencing and I spent it tubing in Harper’s Ferry! We had a big group of people and had a great time sweating cooling off in the river! One of my friends M made some amazing fruity hippie juice while I brought adult gummy bears (read: vodka soaked!).  Both were a huge hit! We snacked, drank, and lazed the heatwave-day away!

As I mentioned din my previous post (and if you cant already tell), I’ve been updating my blog to have a more snazzy design! I am in no way blog-creative and am somewhat technically challenged when it comes to website design, but I hope I can get this blog completed soon! So thanks for sticking around while this place is under construction.

Now onto the most exciting news to share. Based on a recommendation from M, I am creating a new series on here- froyo reviews! If you follow me on here and Twitter you know how serious this addiction is- and there’s only one way to cure it- trying every froyo place I can!  More info can be found on the Froyo Love page!

Oh, and I joined a gym again!  Feels so good to be back in there lifting weights and getting my sweat on!

Hope everyone had a fabulous weekend!  Rock on lovers 🙂

Week of Awesome

Hello and Happy Tuesday lovers!!  How was everyone’s weekend??  I hope you had amazing weather like we did in DC last weekend!!

I dont want to apologize for being a bit absent because life has been filled with some amazing things recently!!  Amazing things that have clogged my social calendar and left me craving me time 🙂  But I love it!

My awesome week was pretty normal.  I worked, I came home, worked out, enjoyed the nice weather, and had froyo like always at my fav spot in DC.  Seriously, I have had my fair share of froyo the past couple years and this place just tops them all!

I also played in my first soccer game since high school!  I was SOO worried I wouldn’t do well since I literally hadn’t played in almost 10 years (hello I am getting old!).  But my soccer buddy K assuaged my fears and we actually ended up winning the game!  And I got a killer workout playing halfback- a very run-heavy position- as I was  the only girl for most of the game!  As its a coed team rules state we have to have three girls on the field the whole time- fortunately our 2 other girls came at halftime, but no subs!  Needless to say I was spent after an hour game!  Afterwards K and I got celebratory froyo 🙂

Silly

Yum!

I had so much fun even though my skills definitely need some polishing.  But thankfully K was sweet and didn’t say how poorly I really did 🙂 It was an awesome first game!!

So on to the weekend wheremore awesomeness happened.

Friday night I had a long-overdue movie night with one of my best friends S.  She is one of the most kind, selfless, patient and understanding friends I have and I seriously don’t know where I would be without her.  I am so grateful to have her in my life!  And I am lucky to work in the same building with her, so if I have a crisis (if=when) I can always run to her desk and she saves the day 🙂  We had a hard time deciding what movie to watch so we settled on an old Disney movie- Oliver and Company!

So cute!

Who remembers this adorable movie?  I swear Disney movies are even better now that I am older!!

Saturday began with an early 8am wake up call and glorious breakfast.

Heaven in a bowl!

This was an awesome bowl of egg white oats topped with a big blob of crunchy almond butter and granola.  So SO good!  I never want my oatmeal bowls to end!!

After breakfast I headed into DC for a day of volunteer service I signed up for and found out through a Twitter Friend R (cant thank you enough for the invite!!).  A slew of volunteers, military and civilians from local universities and around town got together for the inaugural Veteran’s Service Initiative hosted by George Washington University.  From the VSI Blog:

The VSI connects students of the military community with opportunities to serve in their communities, regardless of their university affiliation.  The VSI provides resources that can connect individuals with the service they want to provide to their community and with organizations that satisfy their personal or professional goals and interests. The program also provides consulting for large scale projects and initiatives for individuals and large veteran groups, as well as promotes social entrepreneurship through service grants that are available for student veterans.

As many of you know I am a HUGE supporter of our military and vets, so I was more than thrilled to join in the volunteering!  I along with several other vets and civilians spent the beautiful Saturday cleaning up a neighborhood creek.  After the event I chatted with several fellow volunteers at the reception (which had some awesome pita chips and hummus action!) and instantly made connections with these amazing people!  Vets that have served our country and continue to serve by volunteering their time to help others in need is so inspiring.  It was such an amazing experience meeting these people and an honor to have spent the day helping out the DC community with them!  I officially sent in my application to Team Rubicon and cannot wait to help out even more!!

Our awesome volunteers! (I'm on the far left)

Check out Team Rubicon’s mission and pass the word on to any vets you may know that are looking to get involved!!

The weekend of awesome was topped off by a linner (lunch/dinner for those that don’t know that term), with a bunch of my college friends visiting from all over- and one, R, with her new baby I finally got to meet!!  It’s crazy to see my friends getting hitched and having the offspring…

Yes, offspring.

But I love it and I loved spending time doing these awesome things this weekend!  This week is another crazy one- soccer games, happy hours, and a weekend with S’s parents in the country so I can commune with nature!  I cant wait!!

Have a fabulous week!!  Rock on Lovers 🙂

Question: What awesome thing(s) have you done recently?
